Greetings from Ohio
I have been asked by Ernest Boyd, Executive Director of the Ohio
Pharmacists Association to post this request.
Mr. Boyd is interested in the role pharmacists play in primary
care around the world. Maybe a short explination would be in
order- we in the USA might be in culture shock if we were asked
to dispense drugs without prescriptions. We maybe look (or choose
to ignore) our brother and sister pharmacist in other countries
who have this obligation to community health. We choose to
believe that the patient will go the doctor (primary care provider)
receive a prescription and then come to us for the drug.
In countries where the pharmacists is in the role of primary care
provider how do you:
– view the physician – patient – pharmacists relationship
– document your decision on what drug should be dispensed and what
diagnosis you make
– justify your diagnosis and treatment to governmental agencies (ie.
the courts)
– receive compensation for your diagnosis, consultation and dispensing
– decide to send a paient to a physician
– do you recommend patients for admission to hospitals, if so are you
the admitting authority
Has your education prepared you adequately for this role, and if there
are pharmacists that were educated in the USA, how did your education
here help or hinder your practice at home?
I am not sure what Mr. Boyd has in mind, I do not think the USA is ready
for the pharmacists as primary care provider, though that was a traditional
role for pharmacists at the beginning of this century. I suspect that
his question has something to do with the many drugs that are moving
from Federal Legend (Rx only) to Over-the-counter status. Unfortunately
these drugs move from our prescription control to the corner gas-station
or convenience store where there is no control.
