Unless your doctor has prescribed the herbal supplement (unlikely),
you should probably stop taking it and monitor your heartrate there-
after. Ephedrine alone can cause a rapid heart rate–it doesn’t
require prednisone. And who knows that else is in this supplement?
This is why such concoctions aren’t such a great idea. Also, if
you’re drinking a lot of coffee, you might try cutting down on that
too, since the effects of caffeine are supra-additive with ephedrine,
and caffeine can also cause a rapid heartbeat on its own. The supplement
might even have caffeine in it; frequently it’s hidden under herbal
names of guarana or kola.

I have been taking prednisone for about 6 months for alopecia areata.
Beginning about 3 months ago, I started having problems with rapid
heartbeat. Just light walking would send my pulse up to 150, and I
had to stop running entirely because my pulse would immediately shoot
up to 180+.
I have been taking an herbal supplement called Formula One and I just
recently found out that one of the herbs in it contains ephedrine.
Does it make sense that the ephedrine in combination with the
prednisone could be causing the rapid heart rate?
I would appreciate any info. on this, because when I called the
dermatologist who prescribed the prednisone, she told me to call my
internist. When I called my internist, he told me to call the doctor
who prescribed the prednisone! I’m sort of without resources
here……..

I don’t know about the prednisone (my mom takes it for asthma a lot and
hasn’t mentioned that as a side effect), but it’s probably the ephedrine.
Seems like this is a natural source of epinephrine, which can cause your
heart rate to increase. Just like many of the asthma meds.

Roche Labs has an 800 # 800-526-6367
Tell her to ask her Doc. It’s an MAOI. Still a few around are
Nardil and Parnate. Botht work wonders if you want to do the
dietary dance about them. Don’t eat this food, don’t eat that
one etc.
Have Fun,
Sends Steve

I think she tried both and they didn’t work (nightmares, …)
After calling all the pharmacies around she found one with a 3
month supply. She wants to import Marplan from some other country
now … where it hasn’t been taken off the market. Any ideas?

I checked a recent copy of the "Monthly Prescribing Reference", and as of
last month, Marplan (Isocarboxazid/Roche) was still available in the US.
I believe that this drug is "off patent", therefore it is also available as
a generic. As mentioned in another post, the MAOI’s have declined in
popularity, partly due to the dietary restrictions one must adhere to, and
partly due to the success of the SSRI’s (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil).
