I«ve have heard about something called Smart Drugs – pills that will make
your brain work more effectivly. Do they really exist? If they do, how do
they affect the brain and where can I get them?
I«m a exhausted student who could really use«m!

Do they work? Hmmm…. the FDA hasn’t admitted it yet. Most of
these substances are not approved in the US. I have tried them, I
think they work to an extent, others do as well. They work by
various methods. Some (centrophenoxine) are suppossed to cause the
excretion of waste built up in the brain cells (lipofuschins). Some
increase overall brain metabolism by increased blood circulation
(build these up slowly, this tends to cause a headache if a full dose
is taken right away). I don’t know the mechanism of action for
Piracetam (one of the most popular ones). Vassopressin (aka Diapid)
has the most immediate, noticible effect. This is probably because
you squirt it up your nose, so it is absorbed rapidly. Makes you
feel very clear headed and awake (supposed to sober you up if drunk
also, don’t know haven’t tried it). You can obtain these from a
number of companies abroad, and some import companies in the US. I
would recommend contacting Life Extension Services, 558-A Baltimore
Pike, Suite 230, Bel Air, MD 21014.

No … except in the form of a placebo affect. (Meaning that the
pills contain no active ingredients).

They affect only the wallet. Most health-food stores and pharamcies
carry these products.

Seems like you need sleep more than you need placebos!

Oops. I thought you were referring to OTC drugs. If this wasn’t
the case, then I may be sadly mistaken.
Sorry!

I must disagree with this, as would many who have tried these drugs.
I’m not talking about some herbs at GNC, but the real "nootropics"
available in many european countries. I don’t think that anyone who
has tried DMAE or Vassopressin would dispute that there is definately
some effect, at least a stimulant one, but I feel that they aid in
thinking as well. The other ones like piracetam, hydergine,
centrophenoxine – I don’t know they don’t *feel* like they do much,
but that is hardly a good crtiteria for judging them. Following is
some information from a company who imports these things, reprinted
from sci.life-extension:
LIFE EXTENSION SERVICES
558-A Baltimore Pike, Suite 230
Bel Air, MD 21014 USA
Life Extension Services provides you with easy access to the
products of many companies throughout the world. The service we
offer consists of ordering products for you at the best possible
price, and providing a guarantee of delivery of your order. We do
not profit through the resale of any of the products that we offer.
Our sole source of income is the flat fee we charge for freight
forwarding and insurance. Because of this, it is in our best
interests to offer you the lowest prices available. The following
price list is a compilation of the lowest prices available (from
companies that we have found to be reliable) at the time of printing.
Should we find another source with a better price, we will refund
the money that was saved.
Now a little about the FDA import guidelines: the FDA
started a pilot program in 1988 that allows the importation of
various pharmaceuticals. There is a list of prohibited items that
has been slowly growing. It is difficult to keep up with which
products are allowed to be imported, and which are not. This is
because the FDA does not readily supply the lists. Generally, their
response has been that if you file a Freedom of Information Act
request, they will be forced to release the information. Instead of
going through this process all the time, it is easier (and more
reassuring for you) if we simply guarantee delivery of your product.
If the FDA confiscates the product (though no fault of your own: you
must be following the guidelines), and refuses to return it, we will
reorder the product for you, or refund your money.
To meet the import guidelines you MUST:
1. Read and sign the bottom part of the order form.
You MUST NOT:
1. Order more than a three month supply of any given product
at one time.
2. Commercially resell the products.
Our price list contains only the more popular items, as a
comprehensive list is prohibitively large. We will be happy to
search for any special requests that are not on our list. This
process may take some time. Please note that we have added a reduced
insurance rate for orders under $100 at the request of our customers.
If you have any questions, or comments, please let us know – we are
always looking for ways to improve our service. If you have been
pleased with our service, please let others know about us. To insure
our customers privacy we do not maintain mailing lists. After an
order is filled, all paperwork is discarded. For this reason, we do
not automatically send out updated lists. Please write if you would
like one.
