I must disagree with this, as would many who have tried these drugs.
I’m not talking about some herbs at GNC, but the real "nootropics"
available in many european countries.  I don’t think that anyone who
has tried DMAE or Vassopressin would dispute that there is definately
some effect, at least a stimulant one, but I feel that they aid in
thinking as well.  The other ones like piracetam, hydergine,
centrophenoxine – I don’t know they don’t *feel* like they do much,
but that is hardly a good crtiteria for judging them.  Following is

Do they work? Hmmm….  the FDA hasn’t admitted it yet.  Most of
these substances are not approved in the US.  I have tried them, I
think they work to an extent, others do as well.  They work by
various methods.  Some (centrophenoxine) are suppossed to cause the
excretion of waste built up in the brain cells (lipofuschins).  Some
increase overall brain metabolism by increased blood circulation
(build these up slowly, this tends to cause a headache if a full dose
is taken right away).  I don’t know the mechanism of action for
Piracetam (one of the most popular ones).  Vassopressin (aka Diapid)
has the most immediate, noticible effect.  This is probably because
you squirt it up your nose, so it is absorbed rapidly.   Makes you
feel very clear headed and awake (supposed to sober you up if drunk
also, don’t know haven’t tried it).  You can obtain these from a
number of companies abroad, and some import companies in the US.  I
would recommend contacting Life Extension Services, 558-A Baltimore
